Top Things To Know

1) Past Champion, Finalist and Up-and-Coming American in Action Monday

The 33rd Delray Beach Open ATP 250 event kicks off Monday. Cameron Norrie of Great Britain, the 2022 champion, will be in action as will 2023 finalist Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia. American Brandon Nakashima, 23, who won the 2022 ATP Next Gen Finals for top young players, plays in the night session. Since last summer he's enjoyed wins over Top 20 players Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Frances Tiafoe, Holger Rune, Lorenzo Musetti and Sebastian Baez.

2) No Rest for the Qualifiers

The four qualifiers and a lucky loser all played the final round of qualifying on Sunday, and will be back in action on Monday. American Tristan Boyer qualified for his second ATP Tour-level main draw. His first was at last month's Australian Open, where he won his first round. Boyer, who played at Stanford, tied the record for most Challenger match wins in a season for an American last year with 44. American Zachary Svajda qualified for the Delray Beach Open for the second year in a row. And fellow American Michael Mmoh, who reached the quarterfinals here in 2023, just returned from an elbow injury last week after nine months off the tour and has qualified for his second tournament in two weeks. The fourth qualifier was Japanese player James Trotter, who won the 2023 NCAA doubles title while playing for Ohio State. And 2023 NCAA singles champion for Georgia, Ethan Quinn, made it into the main draw as a lucky loser.

3) Draw is Top Heavy With Wild Cards

All three wild cards have ended up on the top half of the draw: Reilly Opelka, the 2020 champion and 2022 finalist; Learner Tien, 19, who made a stunning run to the Australian Open fourth round last month; and Mackenzie McDonald, a two-time semifinalist here.

4) Doubles Delight

American duo Mackenzie McDonald and Alex Michelsen face Australian John-Patrick Smith and American Ryan Seggerman in first-round doubles action on Monday. Smith is just coming off a runner-up finish in the mixed doubles at his home Slam, and McDonald was the 2016 NCAA doubles champion (as well as singles) for UCLA. The Dallas final on Sunday featured two doubles teams who will be in Delray. Christian Harrison and Evan King def. Robert Galloway and Ariel Behar 7-6(4), 7-6(4). They could have a rematch in the Delray second round.

5) Record for Americans in Second Round on the Line

Twelve Americans are in the main draw. Two matches involve Americans against each other, and three have first-round byes. If the other five all win their first-round matches, they will set the record for Americans in the second round with 10, surpassing the current record of nine that has happened three previous years.
